2018 DJ’s

Shelby Johnson (Dallas, TX)

Shelby Johnson is a self-proclaimed music snob, who fell in love with jazz at an early age listening to the sounds of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Count Basie. He really fell in love with swing music in the 6th grade thanks to a music appreciation class, and later started playing jazz in the 8th grade after 3 years in band as a drummer and percussionist. In high school, Shelby started playing the vibraphone and would transpose his parts for most pieces, as many pieces didn’t provide written music. This developed Shelby’s ear for music that was a huge catalyst for him catching the swing dance bug in 2011 in Orlando, Florida. And BOI, what kind of journey that has started! 2 years later, Shelby became one of the premier DJs in the Southeast, being featured at exchanges in Florida and South Carolina. In 2013 Shelby moved to Dallas, TX, where he continues to deliver awesome syncopated tunes for Lindy Hop, Charleston, Balboa and Collegiate Shag. Shelby’s passion for social dancing, teaching and competing landed him the 2016 Frankie Manning Ambassador Scholarship to Herrang Dance Camp where he expanded his knowledge on Jazz Dance and Music History. Two years later Shelby was awarded the Spirit of Lindy Hop Award at the 2018 Camp Jitterbug and Northwest Lindy Hop Championships after taking on more of an active role in working to provide a safer dance space for people of color and bringing up issues for non hearing people.

Nick Davis (Eugene, OR)

Nick Davis began dancing in 1998 and discovered Lindy Hop in 2002. After founding Eugene, Oregon’s Track Town Swing in 2012, Nick has traveled around the globe to hone his dancing skills. He was the 2014 Frankie Manning Foundation Ambassador to Herräng Dance Camp in Sweden.
Since then, Nick has become part of the Frankie Manning Foundation and is actively involved in shaping the future of the global swing dance scene. When not traveling to dance events Nick can be found teaching and DJing in his home scene of Oregon. He believes bringing people together through the job of Lindy Hop is his true life calling.

Rachel Phillips (San Francisco, CA)

Rachel first began DJing at UC Berkeley where she is President of Lindy on Sproul. She quickly realized that she loved finding new-to-her classic tunes and playing her favorite songs for dancers, and she began DJing throughout the Bay and beyond. Rachel’s favorite songs often feature Johnny Hodges on the saxophone or Count Basie on piano, and her music emphasizes a prominent rhythm section contrasted with playful soloists and melodies. She’s excited to be back DJing at Lindy on the Rocks for a second year in a row.

Chip Self (Denver, CO)

Chip began DJing swing music over ten years ago in his home scene of Auburn, AL.  Since then he’s DJed in cities all across the southeast in states such as Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee and Florida, but he now calls Denver, CO home.  His DJing style is one which honors the classics but isn’t afraid to blend in the contemporary as well.  From Dixieland to Gypsy and New Orleans style to European, there’s bound to be something new and exciting to get you up and onto the dance floor.  Always up for a dance or a chat about music, come say hello!

Elijah Ryberg (Phoenix, AZ)

Elijah Ryberg is a Phoenix based swing dancer and DJ. Passionate about all forms of swing dancing, Elijah fell in love with lindy hop first. Elijah has been spinning tunes since 2015 at dances in Phoenix, and over the past two years has DJ’d at events around the Southwest and Rockies. He enjoys classic big band music, hot jazz, and even enjoys opportunities to spin Disney songs and soul music. As a dancer Elijah identifies as both a lead and follow, and loves dancing with new people.
